Chinese Marble: What We Supply
Chinese marble is dimension stone supplied from China either from domestic quarries or from imported blocks that are cut and finished in Chinese factories. It reaches buyers as slabs, tiles and cut-to-size work, with grade, finish, thickness and packing specified before production for importers, architects and project buyers.
The domestic route covers Chinese-origin stones such as Guangxi White and Panda White, which compete at $25-60/m² and give buyers a budget alternative to Italian classics. The block-processing route imports raw blocks from Italy, Spain, Turkey and Iran, then cuts and finishes them in Fujian and Shandong. A buyer can therefore purchase a documented Italian block with Chinese processing cost. Chinese-processed marble is typically 15-35% below European equivalents, and our quotation range runs from $25 to $400+ per square meter depending on type, grade, finish, format and scarcity [source: stone-phoenix.com].
Our range spans white, black, grey, gold, blue, brown, green, beige, red and pink families. Examples include Bianco Carrara, Calacatta, Arabescato, Bianco Sivec, Aurora White and Ariston White; Black Marquina, Black Zebra, Black Rosa and Black Ice Flower; and colored stones such as Azul Bahia, Blue Savoy, Brown Onyx, Beige Jura and Calacatta Gold. We quote full slabs, calibrated tiles, cut-to-size work and book-matched pairs, from stock or made to order.
Chinese origin is not a grade statement. A Chinese-origin white and a Chinese-processed Italian white can both be Grade A or Grade C. What separates them is the block, grading standard, finishing and inspection record. We quote stone name, block origin and processing location separately, so the buyer can see which facts are being purchased. The distinction matters for design intent and duty treatment.
Color Families and the Stones Behind Them
Color is a procurement variable, not a cosmetic afterthought. The family determines how many quarries can supply the material, how much variation to expect across a project, and how the stone reads at scale. Neutrals such as grey and beige are cut by many factories; blues, greens, reds and premium whites come from fewer quarries and are better bought against a confirmed order.
| Family | Examples in our range | Typical use | Procurement note |
|---|---|---|---|
| White | Bianco Carrara, Calacatta, Arabescato, Bianco Sivec, Aurora White, Ariston White | Feature walls, reception, bathroom walls, low-traffic floors | Stains and etches easily; seal and maintain |
| Black | Black Marquina, Black Zebra, Black Rosa, Black Ice Flower | Statement walls, vanities, powder rooms, inlays | Polish shows marks; honed or leathered may hide them |
| Grey | Tundra Grey, Cinderella Gray, Pietra Grey | Lobby floors, wall panels, bathrooms, large areas | Hides wear; confirm batch tone and absorption |
| Beige and cream | Beige Jura, Crema Marfil | Hotel corridors, floors, wall panels, traditional interiors | Widely specified; tone shifts between blocks |
| Gold and brown | Calacatta Gold, Brown Onyx, Dark Emperador, Emperador Light | Warm feature walls, reception, floors, bars | Gold is scarce; browns offer value; plan onyx use |
| Blue | Azul Bahia, Blue Savoy | Statement islands, reception, feature walls | Thin supply; buy against a confirmed order |
| Green | Dreaming Green, Green Ice Jade | Accent walls, bars, reception, decorative work | Confirm rock type; some green stones are serpentinite |
| Red and pink | Project-specific red and pink selections | Traditional interiors, accents, feature work | Regional demand; reserve blocks and approve the sample |
Read the table as a starting point, not a geological certificate. True marble is metamorphic, but commercial categories include other rocks. Verde Alpi, for example, is classified as serpentinite under European standards though it is widely traded as green marble. Where hardness, absorption or acid resistance matters, name the rock type and test the batch.
White marble is not ideal for high-use kitchen countertops unless the owner accepts visible patina. For heavy acid exposure, a quartzite or engineered surface may be more practical. If marble is chosen, maintenance belongs in the conversation from the first sample.
Polished black surfaces show fingerprints, water spots and dust. Honed or leathered finishes can make marks less visible, but they change the color reading and surface character. Approve the finish on the actual stone under final lighting.
Slabs, Tiles, Cut-to-Size and Book-Matched Pairs
Supply format affects price, handling, installation and waste. The same block sold as a slab, a calibrated tile or a finished countertop carries different processing cost and risk, so format should be confirmed early in the quotation.
| Format | Typical specification | What the buyer should know |
|---|---|---|
| Full slabs | 240×120cm standard; 160×320cm+ large format; 1.6cm and 1.8cm for wall cladding, 2cm for flooring, 3cm for countertops | Baseline format; large slabs add 20-30% for material and handling |
| Calibrated tiles | 305×305 to 800×800mm; calibrated to ±0.5mm; rectified edges for 2-3mm joints | More processing, faster installation and tighter joints |
| Cut-to-size | Countertops, vanities, stair treads and other project pieces; edge profiles and cut-outs included | Higher fabrication cost; shop drawings and approval essential |
| Book-matched pairs | Two adjacent slabs opened like a book to mirror the veining; 10-20% added for selection and waste | Select from one block, number by position and approve by dry-lay |
Full slabs suit buyers with reliable local fabrication. The slab is the most economical format per square meter, but the buyer carries the cutting waste, typically 10-15% for countertop fabrication. Importers without local fabrication capacity can use calibrated tiles or cut-to-size pieces to reduce site work, at a higher processing cost.
Custom sizes are a fabrication instruction, not a separate material category. Dimensions, thickness, edge profile, cut-outs, vein direction, joint direction and installation sequence belong on one drawing. The factory should return a shop drawing for approval before cutting begins, because one dimensional error can affect a whole wall or floor zone.
Book-matching needs block selection, not later sorting. Two attractive slabs from different blocks are not a pair. Reserve the matched slabs at block stage, number them by installation position and approve a dry-lay photograph before shipment. Book-matching adds 10-20% to material cost and needs slabs large enough for the panel: a 3m wall requires 1.5m-wide slabs minimum.
Finishes: Matching the Surface to the Application
Finish is part of the specification because it changes slip resistance, maintenance, color reading and price. A polished and a honed surface from the same block can read as different stones in one room, so finish should be named in the RFQ, not left to a factory default.
| Finish | Surface character | Typical use | Slip reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Polished | Mirror gloss; deepens color and veining | Feature walls, reception fronts, column cladding | Low, around DIN R9; slippery when wet |
| Honed | Smooth matte; hides micro-scratches | High-traffic floors, bathroom floors, countertops | Moderate, around R10 |
| Brushed | Satin, subtly textured and aged | Interior and exterior floors, paving, wet areas | Around R11 |
| Leathered | Matte with a dimpled, leather-like texture | Feature floors, bars, islands, touch surfaces | R10-R11; hides fingerprints |
| Flamed | Rough, rugged and non-reflective | Entrance thresholds, stairs, pool surrounds | R11+; wet DCOF above 0.65 |
Polished is the default and is normally included. Honed is roughly the same price. Brushed, leathered and sandblasted finishes add $2-15/m² depending on the factory. The finish premium is modest compared with correcting the wrong surface after installation.
For floors, honed is the working choice. It hides micro-scratches, gives better wet grip than polished and is recommended for high-traffic hotel floors. Polished floors can look spectacular at opening and tired within 18 months under lobby traffic. If polished marble is used on a floor for design reasons, the project should fund annual machine polishing.
For vertical surfaces, polished is the default because there is no foot traffic to wear the surface. Hotel wall panels commonly run 15-20mm, and reception desk tops 3cm. Flamed marble appears at entrance thresholds, elevator landings and stair nosings where slip safety matters, but availability varies, so test the actual stone.
Brushed and leathered surfaces give an aged, tactile look. They are used in boutique hotels for feature walls, reception desks and bar fronts, and leathered surfaces hide fingerprints. The texture can mute the veining, so approve a sample of the exact stone, finish and lighting before production.
Marble floors need sealing every 6-12 months, immediate spill cleanup and pH-neutral cleaners. A sealer slows absorption; it does not make marble acid-resistant.
Where Marble Works, and Where It Does Not
Marble is a finish material, not a universal performer. It rewards a specification that matches the service condition. The table sets out the applications where buyers most often use it, with the limitation that should be discussed before ordering.
| Application | Specification that works | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel lobby floor | 20mm honed tiles or slabs; absorption ≤0.3% (ASTM C97); repolishing every 3-5 years | Needs dense marble and a funded maintenance plan |
| Interior wall and reception | 15-20mm polished panels; 3cm polished reception top; book-matched feature where required | Keep polished surfaces on vertical faces, not busy floors |
| Bathroom | Honed floor; polished or honed wall; sealing every 6-12 months | Wet polished floors are slippery |
| Kitchen island or show kitchen | Polished or honed, sealed, with cutting boards and low-acid use | Acid can etch within seconds; heavy use needs a harder material |
| Exterior cladding or paving | Mild, dry climates only; absorption at or below 0.3% and batch test; engineered fixing | Freeze-thaw and acid rain make marble a poor exterior specification |
| Interior wall cladding | 15-30mm panels; engineered substrate and fixing | Heavy panels need proper support |
Marble's weaknesses are material properties, not defects. It rates Mohs 3-4, so it scratches more easily than granite. It is calcium carbonate and dissolves on contact with acid; lemon juice, wine or a vinegar-based cleaner can etch a polished surface within seconds. It is also porous enough to stain without sealing and prompt spill control.
That does not make marble inappropriate for upscale projects. It means the application must match. A guest bathroom, a reception wall and a hotel lobby floor are different service conditions, and one stone should not be specified for all three without adjusting thickness, finish and maintenance.
Hospitality is a useful test case because traffic is relentless. Marble can work in a lobby when the stone is dense, absorption is at or below 0.3%, the finish is honed and the owner funds repolishing every 3-5 years. It performs poorly when a polished floor is chosen for appearance with no maintenance budget. The finish decision is operational as much as aesthetic.
Exterior use needs a separate discussion. Marble is not a specification for exterior cladding in freeze-thaw climates, and acid rain weathers calcite stone. It is limited to mild, dry climates, and even there the design should manage water, slip and cleaning. Granite and dense quartzite are more defensible exterior choices.
Marble, Granite and Quartzite: Specifying by Application
Start with the service condition, not a generic ranking. Marble, granite and quartzite answer different questions, and the correct choice can change from room to room.
| Requirement | Marble | Granite | Quartzite |
|---|---|---|---|
| Veined appearance and book-matching | Natural, fluid veining; strong book-match potential | Limited veining relative to marble | Marble-look appearance with granite toughness |
| Hardness | Mohs 3-4; scratches more easily | Mohs 6-7 | Positioned as a harder marble alternative; verify the batch |
| Acid exposure | Etches on contact | Good when sealed; does not etch like marble | Test the actual lot rather than assuming marble behavior |
| Exterior and heavy traffic | Interior use; mild, dry exteriors only with care | Strong exterior and high-traffic option | Dense quartzite is used outdoors; supply is variable |
| Maintenance planning | Sealing every 6-12 months; careful spill control | Annual sealing; less acid-sensitive | Confirm the supplier's care guidance for the specific lot |
For a hotel lobby, bathroom or feature wall where veining drives the design, marble with a maintenance plan is appropriate. For a high-use kitchen, outdoor kitchen or exterior in a freeze-thaw climate, granite is more defensible. For a white, veined look with more toughness, quartzite is worth evaluating, but supply is variable and batch reports matter.
Quartzite is not engineered quartz. Engineered quartz is a resin-bound composite with a low heat limit; quartzite is a separate stone category sold on a marble look with granite toughness. Keep the two names separate in the specification, because fabrication and heat rules differ.
The full comparison of cost, maintenance and service life is in our Granite vs Marble vs Quartz guide.
Grades, Tests and What Moves the Price
A marble price is not comparable until grade, format, finish, thickness and origin are named. Two suppliers can quote the same stone name at different prices because they are describing different products.
Grade A is uniform in color, consistent in veining and free of cracks, repairs and resin filling. Grade B has minor natural faults, occasional color variation and limited repair. Grade C has visible flaws, cracks that require filling, patches and repairs. Grade A commands a 40-60% premium over Grade C, and Grade B is typically 20-30% below Grade A. Most container-load marble shipped from China is Grade B, often the value choice for floors and secondary areas; book-matched feature walls and reception desks justify Grade A.
The table below is a planning range, not a quotation. Prices are FOB China per square meter for 2cm polished slabs. Tiles and cut-to-size pieces vary with dimensions, and every range moves with grade, thickness, finish and MOQ.
| Marble type | Typical FOB China range | Buyer note |
|---|---|---|
| Chinese-origin white (Guangxi White, Panda White) | $25-60/m² | Budget alternative to Italian whites |
| Carrara White, commercial | $45-90/m² | Abundant supply; the entry point to Italian white |
| Carrara White, select | $90-160/m² | Cleaner ground and tighter veining |
| Calacatta, commercial | $120-220/m² | Rarity and bold veining drive the premium |
| Calacatta Gold, premium | $200-400+/m² | Scarce gold veining at the top of the range |
| Crema Marfil | $35-65/m² | Warm beige for floors and corridors |
| Dark Emperador | $40-80/m² | Consistent reorder brown |
| Emperador Light | $25-62/m² | Value brown for volume work |
| Black Marquina (Nero Marquina) | $60-120/m² | Black ground with white veins |
| Tundra Grey and Cinderella Gray | $35-70/m² | Grey lobby and floor material |
| Pietra Grey | $35-70/m² | Grey with white veining |
Large-format slabs can add 20-30% to the slab baseline, and book-matching adds 10-20% for selection and waste. FOB is not the landed number. Ocean freight, insurance, duties, port charges and inland delivery can add 50-65% on top of FOB, so build a landed-cost model before comparing a supplier price with a local warehouse price [source: stone-phoenix.com].
Request test reports for the actual batch. ASTM C97 covers absorption and density; C170 covers compressive strength; flexural data supports panel and countertop design; ASTM C503 is the marble standard in our reference list. For wet or exterior use, absorption at or below 0.3% under ASTM C97 is a common specification. A catalog average is not batch evidence. The report should identify the block or production lot it describes.
Writing Acceptance Criteria Into the Purchase Contract
A purchase order should settle acceptance before production starts. Describe the material in terms that can be measured, not only by trade name.
| Clause | What to write |
|---|---|
| Stone and origin | Trade name; block origin; processing country; Chinese-origin or imported block |
| Grade | Grade A, B or C with a written definition; no substitution without approval and a new sample |
| Format and dimensions | Slab, tile or cut-to-size; 240×120cm standard or 160×320cm+ large format; 1.6cm, 1.8cm, 2cm or 3cm; calibrated tolerance ±0.5mm |
| Finish and edge | Polished, honed, brushed, leathered or flamed; edge profile and cut-outs on the shop drawing |
| Quantity | Net square meters by format; 5-8% extra; book-matched pairs listed separately |
| Color | Sealed retained sample; dry-lay photograph or video; viewing light stated; block or run reserved |
| Testing | Batch ASTM C97 and C170 reports; absorption at or below 0.3% (ASTM C97) where required; ASTM C503 reference |
| Packing | ISPM-15 crates; panels numbered in installation order; layout drawing; batch number on the packing list |
| Inspection and payment | Third-party inspection (SGS or BV) for large orders; 30% deposit, 70% before shipment after inspection; reject and replacement procedure |
Tolerances matter. Calibrated tiles are ground to ±0.5mm, and rectified edges permit 2-3mm joints. Write the tolerance and joint width into the purchase order rather than relying on the word "calibrated". A 2cm slab and a 3cm slab are different products, so show them as separate line items.
Name the lighting for color acceptance. The same slab can read grey under fluorescent light, blue in north daylight and nearly black under warm interior light. Approve under final lighting, and state the loading sequence for multi-container projects.
For EU projects, CE marking and a Declaration of Performance belong in the documentation; US projects typically specify ASTM reports. State what happens if a panel is cracked, repaired or finished differently from the sample.
Sealed Samples and Batch Consistency
Color consistency is a procurement control. A photograph cannot represent a marble's color range, so request images or video of the actual slabs, not catalog images. For premium work, a dry-lay record of the production lot is the standard check.
A physical sample should be 10×10cm or 30×30cm. For a shortlist, 3-5 candidate stones from different suppliers typically cost $5-30 including courier. A sample establishes family and tone, not an exact match, because stone varies between blocks.
Reserve blocks for the whole order. A single block yields roughly 60-100 m² of 2cm slabs, so a multi-container project needs blocks selected together, not purchased sequentially. Hold those blocks, approve a sealed reference sample that both parties retain, and label it with stone, block, batch, finish and thickness.
Before shipment, require a dry-lay photo or video, number panels by installation position and check the layout against the drawing. Load in installation order and order 5-8% extra for waste and future replacement. For book-matching, reserve the pair at block stage; the 10-20% premium cannot be created from unrelated slabs.
These controls do not erase variation; they make it visible before it becomes a dispute.
Packing, Container Loading and Damage Control
Marble is heavy and brittle, so packing and loading are part of the specification. A 20ft container holds roughly 400-500 m² of 2cm slabs, or 20-27 tonnes. A standard 240×120cm slab at 2cm weighs roughly 170-190kg, so a container can reach its weight limit before its volume limit. Loading plans should check both.
Full-container loading cuts freight cost per square meter and can reduce damage risk 3-5× compared with LCL. For trial quantities, LCL remains an option; for volume, a full container and a packing specification are the safer commercial choice.
Specify ISPM-15 crates. Number book-matched panels and include a layout drawing. Record the batch number on every packing list. Where a project spans several containers, load in installation sequence so the site team can match crates to rooms.
Photograph the dry-lay, packed crates and container loading. Those records support a claim if damage appears in transit. Marine insurance on ICC-A terms at 110% of cargo value is a standard landed-cost line. The balance payment should follow inspection.
Incoming Inspection Checklist
An arrival inspection should be both documentary and physical. Check these items before installation and before the balance is released.
- Count: crate count, slab or tile count and area against the packing list; confirm batch and panel numbers match the documents.
- Measure: thickness and calibration against ±0.5mm; joint width if rectified, normally 2-3mm.
- Appearance: compare against the sealed sample under project lighting; check color, veining, finish and book-match sequence.
- Defects: inspect for cracks, repairs, resin filling, chips and edge damage. Grade A material with repairs or cracks does not match its definition; quarantine it.
- Reports: confirm ASTM C97 and C170 results are tied to the delivered batch; verify absorption at or below 0.3% where specified; check ASTM C503 and CE marking or DoP for EU projects.
- Spares and packing: confirm the 5-8% extra material, ISPM-15 marking, layout drawings and numbered panels.
Document issues with photos and crate labels, hold the affected material and notify the supplier before cutting. A repair acceptable on a Grade B floor can be a reject on a book-matched Grade A wall. Acceptance should follow the grade and location, not a generic standard.
Ordering, Lead Time and Documentation
The minimum order is normally 1 × 20ft container, roughly 400-500 m² of 2cm slabs or 20-27 tonnes. Some suppliers accept 20-50 m² trial orders for stocked colors such as Crema Marfil, Emperador or Carrara. Blues, greens and premium whites are more often quoted against a confirmed order.
Stock material ships faster and costs less than made-to-order production; made-to-order items add 15-25 days. Production is typically 15-25 days after approved samples and shop drawings, and a hospitality project should allow 8-12 weeks to site. Stocked Tundra Grey or Carrara can be available for 2-3 week delivery. Chinese New Year closes factories for 2-4 weeks, so plan around that window.
Samples are normally 10×10cm or 30×30cm and cost $5-30 including courier. Standard terms are 30% deposit and 70% before shipment after inspection. For orders of $50,000+, an L/C at sight can protect both sides, and large orders should include third-party inspection by SGS or BV.
Documentation should travel with the goods: batch ASTM C97 and C170 reports, ASTM C503 reference, CE marking and DoP for EU projects, ISPM-15 confirmation, a packing list with batch numbers and a numbered layout drawing. Shipments typically move FOB Xiamen or Qingdao. Consolidating floor, wall and reception stone into one container improves freight efficiency and keeps batches closer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which marble colors and varieties can you supply?
We quote white, black, grey, gold, blue, brown, green, beige, red and pink families. Examples include Bianco Carrara, Calacatta, Arabescato, Bianco Sivec, Aurora White, Ariston White, Black Marquina, Black Zebra, Black Rosa, Black Ice Flower, Azul Bahia, Blue Savoy, Brown Onyx and Beige Jura. Availability varies by color, so rare blues, greens and premium whites are better confirmed against a specific order.
What is the minimum order quantity?
The normal minimum is 1 × 20ft container, roughly 400-500 m² of 2cm slabs or 20-27 tonnes. Trial orders of 20-50 m² are sometimes available for stocked colors such as Crema Marfil, Emperador and Carrara. Blues, greens and premium whites are usually quoted at full-container volume.
What sizes and thicknesses can you supply?
Standard slabs are 240×120cm; large-format slabs start at 160×320cm+. Thicknesses include 1.6cm and 1.8cm for wall cladding, 2cm for flooring and 3cm for countertops. Tiles run from 305×305 to 800×800mm, and cut-to-size work follows the drawing. Calibrated tiles are held to ±0.5mm, and rectified edges allow 2-3mm joints.
Which finish should I choose for floors, walls and wet areas?
Honed is the practical floor finish: it hides micro-scratches and gives better wet grip than polished, at around R10. Polished suits vertical surfaces and low-traffic features, at around DIN R9. Brushed and leathered sit around R11 and R10-R11; flamed is used at entrances and pool surrounds at R11+, with wet DCOF above 0.65. Test the actual marble before specifying a texture.
Can marble be used in bathrooms and kitchens?
Bathrooms work with a honed floor, sealed surface and pH-neutral cleaner; polished marble on a wet floor is slippery. In kitchens, marble suits a show kitchen, island or vanity where acid exposure is controlled. Lemon juice, wine and vinegar can etch within seconds, and high-use cooking areas are usually better served by granite or quartzite.
How do you control color and batch consistency?
Reserve blocks for the whole order, agree a sealed reference sample that both parties retain, and require dry-lay photographs or video before shipment. A single block yields roughly 60-100 m² of 2cm slabs, so larger projects need blocks selected together. Number panels by position, load in sequence and order 5-8% extra.
What test reports and documents come with an order?
Ask for batch-specific ASTM C97 absorption and density data, C170 compressive data, and separate flexural strength data; ASTM C503 is the marble standard in our reference list. For wet or exterior use, specify absorption at or below 0.3% under ASTM C97. EU projects typically need CE marking and a Declaration of Performance, and packing should confirm ISPM-15 treatment. Reports should carry the batch identity.
How long does production and delivery take?
Production is typically 15-25 days after approved samples and shop drawings; total order-to-site time is commonly 8-12 weeks. Stocked Tundra Grey or Carrara can be available for 2-3 week delivery. Chinese New Year closes factories for 2-4 weeks, so plan around that window. Made-to-order items add 15-25 days over stock.
Can marble be used outdoors?
Marble is not a specification for exterior cladding in freeze-thaw climates, and acid rain weathers calcite stone. If marble is required outside, it is limited to mild, dry climates, with absorption at or below 0.3% and an ASTM C97 report for the actual batch. Granite and dense quartzite are more defensible exterior choices.
Do you supply book-matched slabs?
Yes. Book-matching uses two adjacent slabs from the same block so the veining mirrors. It adds 10-20% to material cost and needs slabs large enough for the panel: a 3m wall requires 1.5m-wide slabs minimum. We number the pair and supply a layout drawing; approve the dry-lay before shipment.
