Raw Stone Blocks — Direct From Quarry
Raw stone blocks are the starting point of the entire natural stone supply chain. Importing blocks rather than finished slabs or tiles offers maximum flexibility: you control the cutting, finishing, and quality sorting according to your local market requirements. This approach is particularly attractive for established stone processors who have their own gangsaws and polishing lines, or for importers supplying multiple fabricators with different dimensional requirements.
Phoenix Power Stone sources granite and marble blocks from our own quarries and a trusted network of partner quarries across China's major stone-producing regions: Shandong, Fujian, Sichuan, and Hubei provinces. We select blocks based on color consistency, structural integrity, and dimensional suitability for slab production.
Block Quality Grading System
| Grade | Criteria | Yield Estimate | Applications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grade A (Premium) | Uniform color throughout, no visible cracks or fissures, consistent grain pattern, minimum 2.5m³ | 85-95% usable slabs | Premium countertops, large-format slabs, bookmatch projects |
| Grade B (Standard) | Minor color variation acceptable, small natural fissures (non-structural), minimum 1.5m³ | 75-85% usable slabs | Standard slabs, commercial tiles, general construction |
| Grade C (Economy) | Variable color, natural fissures present, may require resin treatment, minimum 1m³ | 60-75% usable slabs | Small format tiles, paving, landscaping |
Typical Block Dimensions
| Block Type | Length (m) | Width (m) | Height (m) | Approx. Weight (tons) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 1.5-2.0 | 1.0-1.3 | 1.0-1.3 | 4-9 |
| Medium | 2.0-2.8 | 1.2-1.6 | 1.2-1.6 | 8-20 |
| Large | 2.8-3.3 | 1.5-2.0 | 1.5-1.8 | 18-33 |
Block dimensions are approximate — natural stone blocks are irregular in shape. The usable volume (after trimming irregular edges and removing surface weathered layers) is typically 80-90% of the gross volume. We provide detailed measurement reports with photographs before shipment.
Available Stone Types
Granite Blocks
The majority of our block exports. Chinese granite is globally competitive for its consistent quality, enormous variety, and competitive pricing. Our most exported block varieties:
- G654 (Sesame Grey) — Medium grey, fine grain. Consistently high demand from fabricators in Europe, Middle East, and North America.
- G684 (Pearl Black) — Dark grey-black, uniform. Excellent for high-volume slab production.
- G623 (Rosa Beta) — Pink-grey. Popular in European markets for architectural stone.
- G603 (Padang Crystal) — Light grey with medium grain. Versatile all-purpose granite.
- Maple Red / Multicolor Red — Decorative red granites for feature projects.
- Shanxi Black / Absolute Black — Premium deep black. High value per ton.
Marble Blocks
Chinese marble is gaining international recognition as quarrying and processing technology improves. We supply white, black, beige, and wood-vein marble blocks from quarries in Guangxi, Sichuan, and Yunnan provinces. Marble blocks require more careful handling than granite due to their relative softness and susceptibility to fracturing along natural veins.
Block Selection and Inspection Process
- Quarry selection — We identify blocks at the quarry face, selecting for color consistency within the quarry zone known for your required variety.
- Initial inspection — Visual check for surface cracks, veining patterns, discoloration. Blocks with structural defects are rejected.
- Water spray test — Wetting the block surface reveals the polished color and highlights any hidden cracks or inclusions.
- Photo documentation — All six faces photographed, plus close-ups of any features (veins, color zones). Sent to client for approval.
- Marking and numbering — Approved blocks are assigned unique ID numbers, marked on the block surface, and registered in the shipment manifest.
- Loading supervision — Blocks are loaded onto flat-rack containers or breakbulk vessels under factory supervision, with protective dunnage between each block.
Shipping and Logistics for Stone Blocks
Stone blocks are shipped differently from finished stone products:
- Containerized (Flat Rack): 1-2 large blocks or 3-5 small blocks per 40ft flat rack container. Weight is the limiting factor (max 28 tons per 40ft).
- Breakbulk: For orders of 500+ tons, shipping as breakbulk cargo (blocks loaded directly into the vessel hold) is far more economical per ton. Requires a full vessel booking.
- Ports: Qingdao and Xiamen are the primary Chinese ports for block exports. Qingdao serves Shandong quarries; Xiamen serves Fujian quarries.
Blocks do not require ISPM-15 packaging (they are raw stone), but dunnage wood between blocks must be ISPM-15 compliant.
Why Buy Blocks Instead of Finished Slabs?
- Maximum control — You decide the slab thickness, surface finish, and quality sorting criteria that match your market.
- Lower per-square-meter cost — Blocks eliminate Chinese processing labor costs, which are rising. If your local labor is competitive, this can far improve margins.
- Inventory flexibility — Cut slabs to order rather than holding large finished inventory. Respond to market trends faster.
- Quality transparency — It is harder to hide defects in a raw block than in a polished, resined, and packaged slab.
