Stone projects follow a natural sequence that cannot be rushed. The stone must be selected, the template measured, the slab fabricated, and the finished piece installed — each step depends on the one before it. Understanding this timeline helps you plan realistically and avoid the single most common source of project stress: unrealistic expectations about how long things take.
Kitchen Countertop Timeline: 3-5 Weeks
Week 1-2: Research and Selection
Visit stone yards. Collect samples. Compare quotes from at least three fabricators. Bring cabinet door samples, flooring samples, and paint chips to the stone yard. This is absolutely not the step to rush — you will look at this stone every day for decades. View slabs in both natural and artificial light. Ask to see slabs upright (as they will be installed), not just flat on the rack.
Week 2-3: Templating
Digital templating takes 1-2 hours. A laser measuring system captures every dimension, corner, and cutout with millimetre precision. Critical requirement: cabinets must be fully installed, level, and in their final position. The template is only as accurate as the cabinet installation. Week 3-4: Fabrication
The fabricator cuts your slab to the template, polishes edges, and cuts sink and cooktop openings. Typical fabrication time: 5-10 business days. Week 4: Installation
Installation takes 4-8 hours for a standard kitchen. The stone is brought in, dry-fitted, adjusted, and permanently set. Seams are filled with colour-matched epoxy. After installation, the countertop must not be used for 24 hours while adhesives cure. Plumbing reconnection happens the following day.
