What Is Travertine?
Travertine is a type of limestone formed by mineral springs — especially hot springs. Its defining characteristic is the presence of natural voids, pits, and channels created by gases escaping during formation. These voids give travertine its distinctive textured appearance, but they also require filling (with cement or resin) for many applications to create a smooth, functional surface. Travertine occupies a unique niche: it offers the elegance of natural stone with warmer, more organic aesthetics than marble, at a more accessible price point.
While Italy (Tivoli, near Rome) is historically the most famous travertine source — think the Colosseum and Trevi Fountain — significant travertine deposits exist in Turkey, Iran, Mexico, Peru, and China. Chinese travertine is increasingly competitive in international markets as quarrying and processing technology matures.

Common Travertine Finishes
Filled and Honed
The most common finish for interior applications. Pits and voids are filled with color-matched cement or resin, then the surface is honed to a smooth, matte finish. Provides a clean, uniform surface. Best for: Interior flooring, bathroom walls, kitchen backsplashes.
Unfilled / Tumbled
The stone is tumbled with abrasives to soften edges and create an aged appearance. Pits and voids are left natural (unfilled), creating a rustic, Old World character. Best for: Rustic flooring, exterior paving, garden walls, Mediterranean and Spanish Colonial architecture.
Polished
Filled travertine polished to a high gloss. Brings out the stone's subtle veining and color depth. Requires dense, premium-grade travertine. Best for: Feature walls, fireplace surrounds, luxury retail interiors.
Brushed
Wire-brushed to create a subtle, uniform texture while retaining the filled surface. A compromise between the smoothness of honed and the character of tumbled. Best for: Interior flooring where some texture is desired but the rustic look is too informal.
Chiseled / Rock-Faced Edge
Mechanically chiseled edges for a hand-cut appearance. Often combined with tumbled surface for maximum rustic character. Best for: External paving, pool coping, garden steps.
Applications by Format
Travertine Tiles
The most common format. Available in standard sizes: 305×305mm, 406×406mm, 457×457mm, 610×406mm, 600×600mm. Thickness: 10-12mm (interior filled-and-honed), 12-20mm (exterior tumbled). French pattern (Versailles pattern) sets — mixing 4-5 different sizes — are a classic travertine layout for upscale interiors.
Travertine Slabs
Large format pieces for countertops, vanity tops, and feature walls. Typically 2cm or 3cm thick. Premium-grade travertine only — the slab format exposes any imperfections. Bookmatched travertine slabs create symmetrical veining patterns for dramatic feature walls.
Travertine Pavers
Thick format (30-50mm) for exterior paving, pool decks, and patios. Tumbled or unfilled finish preferred for outdoor use. Travertine's light color reflects heat — pool coping stays significantly cooler underfoot than darker stones.
Travertine Mosaics
Small format tiles (typically 23×23mm to 48×48mm) on mesh backing for decorative borders, shower floors, and backsplash accents.

Travertine vs. Marble — Which to Choose?
- Choose travertine when: You want warm, organic aesthetics with natural texture. Budget is more constrained than for marble. The project is Mediterranean, Tuscan, or rustic in style. Exterior paving is required (travertine pavers excel outdoors).
- Choose marble when: You need maximum visual impact with dramatic veining. High-gloss polish is essential. The project is formal/classical in style. Budget allows for premium pricing. Interior-only application.
Care and Maintenance
- Sealing: Travertine is porous and acid-sensitive. Seal before use and every 1-2 years. Use a penetrating sealer for unfilled surfaces, or a topical sealer for filled-and-honed surfaces.
- Cleaning: pH-neutral stone cleaner only. Never use vinegar, citrus cleaners, bleach, or ammonia — they permanently etch the surface.
- Spills: Wipe acidic spills (wine, coffee, juice, tomato sauce) immediately. Even with sealer, prolonged exposure etches travertine.
- Exterior: In freeze-thaw climates, ensure exterior travertine is properly installed with adequate drainage. Standing water in pits can freeze and cause spalling.
