Quality Standards for Tombstone Granite
Not all granite is suitable for monuments. Key quality criteria:
- Color consistency: The entire monument set (headstone, base, vase) must match in color. At Phoenix Power Stone, we cut all components of a set from the same block to guarantee a perfect match.
- Surface finish: Polished faces should achieve ≥85 GU at 60° gloss. The contrast between polished faces and rock-pitched or honed sides is a hallmark of quality craftsmanship.
- Water absorption: ≤0.3% (ASTM C97) — critical for freeze-thaw climates. Porous granite absorbs water, which freezes and causes spalling.
- Dimensional accuracy: ±1mm on all dimensions. Cemetery regulations often specify exact base dimensions for plot compatibility.
- Edge quality: Clean, chip-free edges on all profiles. Rough edges indicate poor cutting or handling.
Common Tombstone Designs and Components
Standard Upright Headstone
The most common design. Components: die (upright stone), base (horizontal foundation), and optional vase. Standard sizes range from 24"×18" (small single) to 48"×36" (large double). Custom sizes unlimited.
Slant Marker / Pillow Stone
A sloped front face, wider at the base than the top. Popular in US veterans' cemeteries and modern memorial parks. Provides excellent readability of inscriptions from standing height.
Flat Marker / Lawn-Level Marker
Set flush with the ground. Typically 24"×12" or 30"×18". Used in lawn cemeteries where maintenance equipment passes over graves. Must be thick enough (minimum 4"/10cm) to withstand vehicle weight.
Columbarium Niche Front
The face plate of an ash niche in a columbarium wall. Typically 12"×12" or 15"×15". Includes inscription space and often a vase holder or decorative border.

Ordering Process

- Inscription proof: We provide a digital proof showing exact layout, font, and sizing. Approve before production begins.
- Production: 4-8 weeks depending on order complexity and volume.
- Pre-shipment photos: We photograph every finished monument before packing. You approve before the balance payment is released.
- Shipping: Each monument is individually crated in an ISPM-15 fumigated wooden crate. Steel-banded and corner-protected.
