Why You Need to Know Stone Defects
Every natural stone shipment contains some imperfections — it is a natural material, not a factory-produced commodity. The question is: which imperfections are acceptable, and which should trigger rejection? This guide gives you the vocabulary, visual reference points, and rejection criteria to communicate quality expectations clearly to your Chinese stone supplier. A buyer who can specify "no more than 2 iron spots per slab, each under 3mm diameter" gets better stone than one who just says "send good quality."
Defect #1: Iron Spots (Rust Stains)
What they are: Small rust-colored dots or patches caused by iron sulfide (pyrite) minerals in the granite. When exposed to moisture and oxygen, pyrite oxidizes to iron oxide (rust).
Where they appear: Most common in grey and white granites (G603, G654, White Granite). Rare in black granites.
Acceptance criteria: No visible iron spots on the polished face of premium-grade material. For commercial grade, maximum 1-2 spots per slab, each under 3mm diameter. Reject if: Spots are larger than 5mm, numerous (>5 per slab), or clustered in a visible area.
Why it matters: Iron spots expand when they oxidize outdoors. What starts as a tiny dot can become a 10mm rust stain within 2-3 years of exterior exposure.
Defect #2: Resin Pooling / Overfilling
What it is: Epoxy resin applied to fill natural pits and fissures in granite slabs. When correctly applied, the resin is nearly invisible. When over-applied, it creates glossy patches that are visible under angled light.
Acceptance criteria: Resin fill should be invisible under direct overhead lighting at 2m distance. Reject if: Resin patches are visible from 2m, or the resin has yellowed (sign of UV-degraded or cheap epoxy).
Test method: Inspect slabs under both direct and angled light. View from multiple angles — resin pooling is often invisible head-on but obvious at 45°.
Defect #3: Cracks and Fissures
What they are: Fissures are natural separations in the stone's crystal structure — they are part of the stone's character and are not defects. Cracks are structural breaks that compromise the stone's integrity. The distinction matters.
How to tell the difference: Fissures follow the natural grain or crystal boundaries, are typically not straight, and do not go all the way through the stone. Cracks are straighter, sharper-edged, and may penetrate through the entire slab thickness.
Acceptance criteria: Reject if: Any crack that runs through the full thickness, any crack longer than 50mm on a polished face, or any crack within 50mm of an edge (will expand during fabrication).
Stone-specific note: Marble is more prone to fissures than granite. Some marble varieties (e.g., Panda White, Calacatta) characteristically have more natural veining/fissures — this is part of their aesthetic. Agree on acceptable fissure levels before production using reference samples.
Defect #4: Color Variation Between Batches
What it is: Stone color differing noticeably between slabs within the same order, or between the approved sample and the production run.
Why it happens: Natural stone varies by block. Even within the same quarry, blocks extracted 50m apart can have subtly different color tones. Factories sometimes fill large orders from multiple blocks, creating a checkerboard effect when the stone is installed side by side.
Acceptance criteria: All stone for a single project area should come from the same block. Reject if: Color variation between slabs exceeds the variation shown in your approved reference sample range.
Prevention: The single most effective QC step: require the factory to lay out all your slabs on the floor, in order, photograph them under natural light, and send you the photos for review before shipment. This "dry-lay inspection" catches color variation before the stone leaves China.
Defect #5: Thickness Variation
What it is: Slabs or tiles that vary in thickness beyond the agreed tolerance. This causes lippage (uneven edges) after installation and forces the installer to compensate with extra mortar or grinding — erasing your material cost savings in labor.
Acceptance criteria: ±1mm for calibrated tiles (standard), ±0.5mm (premium), ±2mm for ungauged stone. Reject if: More than 5% of pieces in a random sample exceed the agreed tolerance.
Measurement: Use a digital caliper. Measure at 4 points per tile (each corner). Record and compare against the specification in your purchase order.
Defect #6: Edge and Corner Chipping
What it is: Small chips missing from slab or tile edges and corners.
Causes: Poor cutting (dull diamond blades), rough handling during packing, inadequate edge protection in crates, or movement during transit.
Acceptance criteria: No chips larger than 2mm on polished edges. Reject if: More than 2 chips per slab/tile, or any chip larger than 5mm.
Defect #7: Wire Mesh on Marble Backs
What it is: Fiberglass mesh glued to the back of marble slabs. This is sometimes applied to strengthen fractured or soft stone — it is a red flag for poor material quality.
Acceptance criteria: Premium marble slabs should not require back-meshing. Reject if: The mesh is present on slabs sold as premium grade, or if the mesh was not disclosed before ordering. Some meshing is standard for specific fragile marble types (e.g., some Onyx varieties) — this should be disclosed by the supplier.
The Rejection Protocol: What to Do When You Find Defects
- Document everything immediately. Photos with a ruler for scale, close-ups, and wide shots showing the extent. Video is even better.
- Quantify the problem. "5 out of 50 slabs have iron spots" is actionable. "The stone looks bad" is not.
- Reference the contract specification. "Per our PO, thickness tolerance is ±1mm. We measured 18 tiles at 19.2mm (spec ordered: 20mm). This is a 4% undershoot, outside the agreed tolerance."
- Propose a resolution. Options: (a) supplier replaces defective pieces at their cost, (b) discount on the defective portion (typically 15-30% for minor defects), (c) return and refund for major quality failures.
- Do not pay the balance or authorize shipment until resolved. Your leverage is the 70% balance payment. Use it.
