Project Overview
In late 2022, a Moscow-based memorial construction company contacted Phoenix Power Stone about supplying granite for a cemetery expansion project on the outskirts of Moscow. Russia has a strong tradition of granite memorials, and Chinese granite — particularly Shanxi Black — has been a preferred material in the Russian market for over two decades due to its deep black color, fine grain, and proven winter durability.
The project required 500+ individual headstones in Russian Orthodox style — upright monuments with cross carvings, inscribed base plates, and surrounding kerb sets — plus 1,200 sq m of granite paving slabs for pathways between grave sections.

Challenges & Solutions
Challenge 1: Extreme Climate Durability
Moscow winters reach -30°C, with repeated freeze-thaw cycles throughout spring and autumn. Stone must have near-zero water absorption to survive decades of these conditions without cracking. The client specifically requested ASTM C97 test reports showing water absorption under 0.2%.
Solution: Shanxi Black granite has a water absorption rate of 0.12-0.15% — well within the requirement. We provided individual test certificates for each production batch. The flamed pathway granite (G654) tested at 0.18% absorption. Our technical team also advised on installation best practices: full mortar bed (no spot-bedding), minimum 1% slope for drainage, and sealing before first winter.
Challenge 2: Complex Custom Manufacturing
Russian Orthodox headstones require specific design elements — cross motifs carved into the upper portion of the stone, beveled edges at specific angles, and Cyrillic inscription panels with recessed borders for later engraving. This is not standard catalog work. Each stone was essentially a custom order.
Solution: Our CNC carving and special-shape workshop handled the entire order. The client provided CAD drawings for each headstone model. We programmed these directly into our CNC machines, producing the cross carvings and inscription panels with consistent precision across all 500+ pieces. A dedicated QC inspector checked each piece against the CAD reference before it entered the polishing line.
Challenge 3: Winter Shipping to Russia
The order was produced in November-February — peak winter. Sea freight to St. Petersburg can face ice-related delays during these months. The client needed the stone on site by March for spring installation.
Solution: We shipped via the China-Europe Railway Express through the Manzhouli border crossing, with final delivery by truck to Moscow. Transit time was 18-22 days versus 35-45 days by sea. The containers were insulated and the stone was packed with additional foam protection against temperature shock during transshipment.
Results
- All 500+ headstones delivered with zero breakage — a near-perfect record for a shipment of this complexity.
- Cemetery pathways opened to visitors by May 2023, ahead of the Russian Orthodox Easter memorial period.
- The client reported that the quality of CNC carving exceeded their expectations and matched the CAD renderings exactly.
- A follow-up order for an additional cemetery project was placed in late 2023.
